at edwards and began exchanging gunfire. >> there were no innocent by standards that were hit -- bistandards that were hit. >> reporter: all lanes were closed for 3 hours. police detailed a 16-year-old boy. they say he was hurt as a result of the crash. investigators say no one turned up at an emergency wound with injuries. >> we have good witnesses that called in. we will follow up on that to try to determine what they saw and put this together. >> reporter: many say they heard what happened. >> sounded like automatic gunfire. it sounded like it was moving from my left to my right. this direction, moving in this direction. >> holiday times. oakland has a bad rap. you know, i stay in this area so it has been a lot of shootings over here in this dead area over here. >> i can't believe it.

5:00 p.m. >> officials say san francisco's ocean beach is off limits because of the rain and a sewage spill that led to concerns about contact. ktvu's david stevenson is live to tell us when the warnings might be listed. david? >> the sewage spill means just that this section of ocean beach is closed off though that didn't stop beachgoers today. >> warm thanksgiving day brought hundreds out to ocean beach. many were greeted by barricades. heavy rain tuesday night and wednesday morning overwhelmed the sewer main here. >> it can be overwhelmed. so the run off was about 10% sewage. the rest was rain water. >> reporter: it flowed to the beach and down on to the sand.

crews worked to pump out the water. it must dry before it could be taken away. in the mean time this section of beach is closed. >> they are doing quality testing. once the levels come back they will clear the advisory on that section of the beach. >> reporter: many ignored the warnings, taking their pets for a stroll. >> be okay. you know, mother nature has a way of cleaning herself up. >> i don't like it. looks ugly. >> reporter: neighbors called it an eye sore. >> could have done a better job of setting it up and letting us know. i don't think it is that big of a deal. >> reporter: san francisco public utilities commission wants three days of good water quality test results before it will reopen this stretch of the beach. reporting live from san

francisco's ocean beach, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. nasa scientists are watching a dust storm on mars following a report this week of a discovery by the mars rover curiosity. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler joins us now with why the details are delayed. >> reporter: well, nasa researchers are going to be refining their data for presentation. the rover is about to rewrite the book on mars. >> reporter: after the landing, then sampling the soil and land, scientists promise to make public a historic discovery. >> it was a great teaser. the word earth shaking was used. >> reporter: he is not involved where the mission but points

out nasa designed curiosity to find organic molecules. the building blocks of life. >> they are going to be -- rewrite the book discoveries if we see what we hope to find. >> reporter: curiosity discovered solid evidence water once flowed where it landed. liquid water may exist below the surface. could curiosity have discovered life itself? >> the only life it could detect is something that walked in front of the camera. >> reporter: that would indeed would be amazing. but curiosity doesn't have the equipment to confirm the presence of life. but we could expect details at a san francisco conference two weeks from now. health and science editor john fowler ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a massive 100 car pile up

hospital, including 8 who were critically injured. investigators are looking into how it started. they say the fog was so thick at first deputies didn't even realize they were dealing with multiple accidents. few hours away from more employees walking out at walmart stores. yesterday a group gathered to protest low wages and unfair working conditions. tonight at 8:00 p.m. workers there plan to walk off the job ahead of one of the busiest shopping days of the years. they are also planned in richmond, san jose. a spokesman says the company offers competitive wages. while the holiday is focused on food, it is also time to think about what you are thankful for. ktvu's mike mibach is live with the story. mike? >> reporter: as we go from day to night here on this thanksgiving day we share the
